FAQ

What people ask us

How much does it cost to fix a furnace or AC?

It depends on what failed. Across the U.S., a diagnostic visit often costs about $75 to $200. Small parts like capacitors, igniters or flame sensors usually land between $100 and $450 installed. Motors and control boards run higher, and a compressor or heat exchanger can cost thousands. Prices vary by system, access and local labor rates. Ask the provider for a written estimate that lists parts and labor before any work begins.

What can I safely check myself before requesting a repair?

Check that the thermostat is on the right mode and has fresh batteries. Look for a tripped breaker and make sure the furnace power switch is on. Replace a dirty air filter. Clear leaves and moss from around the outdoor unit. If the system still will not run, stop there. Opening panels or touching wiring is a job for a provider.

What should I never try to fix on my own?

Leave gas valves, burners and venting alone. Do not handle refrigerant, cut into lines or try to recharge an AC, since that requires certification and can injure you. Avoid electrical work inside the furnace or condenser, including capacitors, which can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and contact your gas utility or emergency services from outside.

How can I prevent heating and cooling breakdowns?

Change the filter on schedule, monthly during heavy use. Keep two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit and remove moss and debris. Test the AC on the first warm day and the furnace on the first cool evening. Many homeowners also book a tune-up each year. In damp homes, ask the provider to check crawl space ducts for rust or leaks.

How often should my HVAC system be serviced?

Many providers suggest a yearly check for each system, often the furnace in fall and the AC in spring. A heat pump that runs year round may benefit from two visits. Ask what a tune-up includes before you book.

What happens after I request an estimate?

Your request goes to an independent provider who serves your area. The provider contacts you, asks a few questions and sets up a visit if needed. On site, they diagnose the problem and give you a written estimate. You decide whether to go ahead. There is no obligation to hire.

How do I know whether to repair or replace my system?

Look at age, repair cost and how often it breaks. A system under about 10 years old with a single failed part is usually worth repairing. A unit around 15 years or older that needs a major part, or that fails every season, is worth pricing for replacement. Ask the provider to quote both options in writing so you can compare them calmly.

Does K Heating & Air do the repair or installation work?

No. K Heating & Air is a referral service. We connect homeowners with independent local providers who diagnose, repair and install heating and cooling systems. The provider sets the price, does the work and offers any warranty. We may be paid by providers or marketing partners for referrals, and that does not change the price you are quoted.
